It’s all too common to toss out perfectly good food just because it’s a day or two past the printed date. However, most of those dates are about quality, not safety. According to the USDA, except for infant formula, expiration dates are not mandatory and don’t always indicate when food will actually spoil. In fact, many foods remain safe and delicious long after their “expiration”—if you know what to look for.
1. Eggs
Refrigerated eggs can stay fresh for 3–5 weeks past the sell-by date. Try the float test: if the egg sinks in water, it’s still good.
2. Milk
Milk may be safe up to one week past the printed date if kept cold. If it smells sour or looks thick, it’s time to toss it.
3. Yogurt
Unopened yogurt usually lasts 1–3 weeks past its date. Liquid on top is normal—just stir it in.
4. Hard Cheese
Hard cheeses like cheddar and parmesan can last weeks beyond their date. Moldy spots can be sliced off—just remove about an inch around the mold.
5. Butter
Refrigerated butter stays fresh for 1–2 months past its date. Freeze it to extend shelf life even further.
6. Bread
Bread is fine past its date if there’s no visible mold. Keep it in the fridge or freezer to prevent spoilage.
7. Canned Foods
Low-acid canned foods (beans, vegetables) can last years past their date if the can is undamaged.
8. Pasta
Dry pasta can be used 1–2 years after expiration if kept sealed and dry.
9. Rice
White rice, when stored properly, can last indefinitely. Brown rice will last several months past its date if kept cool and dry.
10. Cereal
Cereal might get a little stale but is safe to eat months later if kept airtight and dry.
11. Peanut Butter
Unopened peanut butter is good for up to a year past the date; opened jars last months in the fridge.
12. Frozen Foods
Freezing halts bacteria. Frozen meals or veggies are safe well past expiration, but texture or flavor may fade.
13. Chocolate
Chocolate may develop a whitish “bloom,” but this is harmless and it’s still safe to eat.
14. Chips and Crackers
These snacks may lose their crunch but are safe as long as they’re not stale or moldy.
15. Honey
Honey never really goes bad—it may crystallize, but gentle warming restores it to liquid.
16. Mustard and Ketchup
Both can last months beyond the date thanks to their acidity and preservatives.
17. Vinegar
Vinegar is self-preserving and can last indefinitely. Any cloudiness is harmless.
18. Pickles
High salt and vinegar keep pickles safe for months past expiration if stored in the fridge.
19. Soy Sauce
Unopened, soy sauce lasts for years; even opened, it keeps for months when stored properly.
20. Dried Beans and Lentils
Dried beans and lentils might take longer to cook as they age but rarely spoil and can be used years past their date.
How to Judge Food Safety
-
Look, Smell, Taste: Always check for off smells, odd textures, or visible mold.
-
Trust Your Senses: If anything seems wrong, don’t risk it.
-
Know the Labels: “Best by,” “sell by,” and “use by” dates are about quality, not safety.
