Scabies Cases Are Surging in the UK—Here’s What You Need to Know
The UK is currently facing an unusually large outbreak of scabies, and health professionals are urging people to seek treatment early—especially if they notice unexplained red dots or persistent itching on their skin.
What Exactly Is Scabies?
Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow under the skin. It spreads through close, prolonged skin contact and can affect anyone, regardless of age or hygiene habits.

A Rise in Diagnoses Across the Country
The NHS has reported over 3,600 scabies-related hospital cases across the UK, with even more likely going unreported.
According to Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, GP diagnoses are now above the five-year average, with a notable increase in the north of England.
The Stigma That Keeps People from Seeking Help
One major issue? Social stigma. Many people feel embarrassed about scabies and choose to manage symptoms quietly, rather than speak to a doctor.
But experts warn that ignoring symptoms can worsen the condition and raise the risk of secondary infections or flare-ups of existing skin issues.
“While not a serious condition, scabies can be very itchy and irritating,” Professor Hawthorne explains. “If not properly treated, it can spread quickly.”
Treatment Challenges
Another factor contributing to the surge is a shortage of medication. With demand rising, some pharmacies and clinics are struggling to keep up, making timely access to treatment more difficult.
Doctors stress that early intervention is still the best defense, and over-the-counter options may not be enough. Prescription creams and oral treatments are often necessary to eliminate the mites completely.
